Grade2XL webinar: Non-destructive testing and monitoring techniques for additive manufactured metallic parts
- Online
- Friday, 12 April 2024 | 13:00 – 14:00 CET
The principal objective of the Grade2XL project is to print extra-large structures using the WAAM (Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing) method with a complete control of the fabrication process. Since WAAM is a relatively new technology for printing large specimens, it is important to develop quality assurance methods that can be used during the fabrication and once the structure has been built, which is the focus of CEA List in the project.
The EMC2 cluster is a partner in the European project Grade2XL. Join this webinar and our two experts from the Grade2XL consortium to learn about in-line monitoring systems, characterization and Non Destructive Testing techniques applied to WAAM.

About the speakers
Steve MAHAUT
Steve Mahaut, PhD in Physical Acoustics, Senior Expert at CEA (Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission), has been involved in Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) for more than 30 years, starting from Ultrasonic Techniques (UT) phased arrays (PhD, funded by IRSN – expertise body for French nuclear safety -) to wider fields of research and other NDE techniques. He has been in charge of R&D projects for various industrial sectors (Energy, Oil & Gas, transports…) prior to head different laboratories within the NDE Department at CEA: Validation & Test Lab, Modeling & Simulation lab, both related to the world leading multiple NDE techniques – UT/ET/RT – software CIVA, aeronautic applications lab, and NDE methods laboratory. Since January 2023, he is in charge of the Monitoring, Control and Diagnostic Section (~ 95 staff) which gathers 4 laboratories involved in advanced instrumentation methods related to NDE and monitoring, including UT, ET, RT, as as thermography techniques, reflectometry, and fiber optics for NDE, (structural health) or (process) monitoring under harsh conditions.
Anaïs BAUMARD
Anaïs Baumard is a research engineer at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). During recent years, her research has focused on the understanding of metallic additive manufacturing processes, from both an experimental and a numerical point of view. She conceived and implemented the first numerical model at CEA dedicated to the prediction of metallurgical grain structure formation of components manufactured using the selective laser melting process. Today, she is the operational supervisor and lead research engineer of the PRISMA platform at the Technology Research Division of CEA, which is a multi-process robotic platform dedicated to metallic Additive Manufacturing.
About Grade2XL
Grade2XL is a European project aligning partners along the value chain to foster the rapid development of WAAM materials and process. Grade2XL will deliver multi-material products of superior quality and performance. The high printing rate of WAAM, combined with the ability to control material properties down to the nanoscale, will allow to build strong and durable engineering structures.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 862017.
